How To Get More Out Of A Wine Tour

If you love wine, then visiting a region where a lot of wine is produced is bound to make for a good vacation. While there, you may want to take a wine tour, visiting several vineyards and wine producers within a day. How can you get the most out of this wine touring experience? Take a look:

1. Research the wineries first

Obtain a list of the wineries you will be visiting on the tour, and look each of them up online before the tour commences. This way, you will know what each winery is known for, and you can use this to inform the wines you choose to sample (when given a choice.) For instance, if you find out that a particular winery is known for its Chardonnay, you will then know to focus your tastings there on Chardonnay. Without this prior knowledge, you may unknowingly try the red wines and miss a great opportunity.

2. Space out the wineries, if possible

Your palate loses its sensibility as you drink. So to ensure you are able to better detect the nuances in each wine, you will want to avoid getting too tipsy. One way to do this is to select a tour with more time between the vineyards. For example, if your tour visits three wineries that are all a 30-minute drive from one another, you will have more time to let your palate (and blood alcohol level) recover between visits.

3. Don't drink what you don't like

Most wineries have spitting vessels where you can spit out wine you do not enjoy. Take advantage of these. If you sample a wine you do not like, spit it out rather than swallowing it, and do not feel bad for dumping the rest of your sample. This is part of wine tasting; everyone has different tastes, and it is not rude to express that you don't like a certain wine.

4. Ask questions

As you embark on tours of the wineries, do not be afraid to ask your tour guide questions. Guides love visitors who are really there to learn about the wine, and not just to get drunk. They will typically answer with enthusiasm, teaching you valuable information about the winery and about wine in general.

With the tips above, you are sure to have a better, more enjoyable wine tour experience. Grab a few friends, and prepare to start sipping.
